Term Poster Project: A Temporal NDVI Study

A study into China's Great Green Wall Project, a long term project designed to take back land that has experienced desertification from the Gobi Desert. The plan utilizes mass-planting of trees in order to create wind breaks to prevent further desertification of key areas of crop land for China's largest cities, most notably Beijing. The project itself utilized Landsat imagery from 2001, 2011, and 2021 in order to calculate NDVI for these planted areas, showing how the forest had grown over time in land cover and how the spectral reflectance of these larger forested areas showed that not only were the forests gaining biomass over the time of the study but also remaining healthy enough to provide the long-term solution China is striving for as a goal for the project. As an added measure, we also monitored how the new-growth forests affected local weather.

Forestry Optimization

Conceived of a geographic optimization model given a set of constraints using linear programming, and then used the model in a custom program coded in Mosel in XPress to select optimal plots for a deforestation effort in Stanislaus National Forest. The model is then used by the program to select the plots that meet all conditions with differing optimization methods with the results taken from the program output and mapped using ArcGIS Pro.

Siberian Forest Fires

Created an ArcGIS StoryMap website and video essay explaining the threat of methane which is locked away in permafrost and is being thawed due to increased temperatures in the region from climate change. These increased temperatures provide the conditions for thunderstorms, which cause forest fires in the dry Arctic forests and help to hasten climate change and the release of some of the Earth's largest stores of methane gas, which would only compound the issue further.

Delivery Optimization

Coded a geographic optimization model in XPress utilizing linear programming for sourcing demand locations with supply locations based on a variety of factors. Matches between locations were made based on certain deciding factors, such as distance between warehouses, shipping prices, and supply limits. Results of the program were then taken and mapped in ArcGIS Pro for easy interpretation.

Computer Building

Built three computers for family and friends with knowledge of motherboards, graphics processing units, central processing units, both Intel and AMD, and a variety of storage solutions including hard drives, solid state disks, and M.2 SATA drives, and more.
